Hastings High School's Fall Vocal Concert is set for Monday

The women's choir performs under the direction of Tatum Mahlen.

The Fall Vocal Concert at Hastings High School is just a few days away.

The concert is planned for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the Hastings High School auditorium.

More than 500 students at the school will perform in a number of different choir groups, each of which will perform two to three songs.

"It's going to be an exciting year for the choirs," director Lin Warren said. "This is an excellent way for us to get started."

Pulling off a big show with that many students just a few weeks after school begins is no small feat for the three choir directors. Kathleen Hanson, Tatum Mahlen and Warren all had their work cut out for them, especially considering the fact that the directors see the students only two to three times per week.

"We just push really hard," Warren said. "This year, the week before the concert is homecoming week, and so many of the kids are active in other things, too. Hopefully we've prepared them well in advance so that this week goes fairly smoothly. That's the hope, anyway."

Once school began the students were hard at work, Warren said.

"We started right away," he said. "It's always a stretch to get ready this quickly. It really makes the year go much smoother after this. They get in the mode quickly."

Performing will be the freshmen women's chorus, the men's chorus, the women's chorus, the concert choir, Bel Canto (a select women's group), the vocal jazz ensemble and Select Chorale.

Admission is $4.

The annual Holiday Concert is planned for 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18.
