Two in custody after spree of stolen, crashed vehicles in SE Minn

Two suspects were taken into custody Monday, Sept. 26, after a bizarre sequence of chases and vehicle crashes in Cannon Falls and Dakota County.

According to a news release Monday by Cannon Falls police:

Police responded to a driving complaint around 9:21 a.m. of a pickup truck pulling a car trailer with its ramps down. When an officer neared State Highway 20, he came across a motor vehicle crash between a semitrailer and a classic car. The driver of the car reportedly fled the scene on foot.

At that point, the pickup from the initial complaint reached the intersection and swerved hard to avoid the officer, who was attempting to stop the vehicle. A gun safe reportedly flew off the back of the pickup and into the shoulder of Goodhue County Road 29.

The officer returned to his squad car and gave pursuit. Authorities say the vehicle crashed after about a mile in Dakota County. The male driver then fled on foot to a farm house.

Police responded to the farm house and set up a perimeter when a vehicle came down the driveway and drove past a squad car. The vehicle was believed to have been stolen.

The vehicle turned onto Mill Street in downtown Cannon Falls and proceeded westbound on Highway 19.

The driver lost control of the vehicle — identified by Minnesota State Patrol as a 2000 Jaguar S-Type — and rolled off the road near Summit Golf Club. The suspect was transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, according to the State Patrol incident report.

Meanwhile, Cannon Falls police, Goodhue County and Dakota County Sheriff’s deputies set up a perimeter to search for the suspect in the other crash. A State Patrol helicopter was called for assistance.

Authorities received a tip that a person who lives in the area had given a male a ride to an address south of Cannon Falls, according to the news release. A suspect was later apprehended at that location.

The man reportedly told officers that he had eaten “a bunch” of methamphetamine, according to the news release. Two more occupants of the residence also advised officers they had consumed meth while the house was surrounded.

Dakota County deputies located the residence of the owner of the classic car involved in the initial crash with the semitrailer and found that the vehicle was stolen. The residence also was reportedly burglarized and a gun safe was taken.

The pickup truck that fled police also was stolen, police said. The trailer that was being pulled behind the truck is being investigated to determine if it too was stolen.

No other information will be released pending the active investigation of the case, police said.

Cannon Falls Area Schools opted to go into a "soft lockdown" Monday as a precaution, Supt. Beth Giese said.
