Firearm discharge at park brings charge

A 48-year-old Vadnais Heights man, John Charles Killeen, faces one count of intentional discharge of a firearm (felony) in connection with a Nov. 29 incident at Spring Lake Park near Hastings.

Killeen apparently shot at a fellow duck hunter at the park.

According to the criminal complaint filed Tuesday, Dakota County deputies spoke with the victim, who said that he stopped his boat and began to throw decoys into the water. H heard another hunter threaten him, telling him to leave the area. Shortly afterwards, a gunshot was heard and the victim observed BBs bounce off the front of his boat. The victim lay down in his boat and used his cell phone to call 911.

The victim heard splashes on the shoreline and observed Killeen coming toward him. The victim then heard a second shot, which went in front of the boat.

Hunters in the area told investigators they heard arguing and then two shots. The hunters said there were no ducks in the area. Killeen was arrested and taken to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office where he was interviewed.

Killeen will be summoned to court in connection with this criminal charge - his first appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 29 in Hastings.
