Longtime Hastings salon owner sells business
Mary Fasbender, a longtime Hastings salon owner and community activist has announced the sale of her company, MDK Design for Hair, LLC, to Nicole Swanson, owner of Nicole’s New Wave Salon.
Swanson will keep the name, location, phone number and all other things of the beloved business, which started in Hastings in 1983.
“It happened really fast,” Swanson said. “... Their location is significantly better than the Westview Mall and she (Fasbender) was looking to move on.”
Swanson will also keep the staff at MDK.
“She’s got a full staff up there of really talented girls that will just work,” she said.
As of July 1, Swanson will take over at the new location located off Highway 55 and plans to merge the two businesses at that location. Nicole’s New Wave Salon has been in business here for 10 years.
Swanson is looking at minor remodeling the new location.
“It’s beautiful in there inside already so you don’t need to do much,” she said.
Swanson said she expects to be moved in and ready for business by July 6. Despite the change in ownership, Fasbender said she is not retiring. According to a press release, she will continue to serve clients at the salon location for a yet undetermined period of time going forward. After a mutually agreed-upon transition period, Fasbender plans to practice cosmetology and service clients on a scaled-down basis in her home-based salon.
“I’ve accomplished everything I’ve wanted to as a salon owner in 33 years,” Fasbender said in the press release. “Community involvement has been a huge part of how I built my business and it helped define my career. I’ll continue to work with clients as a stylist, but I would like to redirect time and energy I was spending to operate the salon to other tasks that I think will benefit the community. Hastings has been great to me and I’m ready to give back.”
While Fasbender still enjoys doing hair, she plans to focus on other things with the time off from the salon.
