Possible delayed road projects

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is seeking additional spending authority following the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis.

If a legislative panel does not give the department authority to spend more than it had planned for 2008, MnDOT officials say about $140 million in road and bridge projects around the state may be delayed so that the Minneapolis bridge reconstruction can move forward.

MnDOT district engineers have submitted a preliminary list of projects that could be delayed if funding is not available. Here are some of those projects:

Twin Cities area:

  • Wakota Bridge construction, Interstate 494 over Mississippi River at border of Washington and Dakota counties, $50 million
  • St. Croix River bridge crossing at Highway 36 in Stillwater, design, utility work, right-of-way acquisition, $4.2 million
  • Noise wall construction, Interstate 694 in Oakdale, $1.47 million

    Northeastern Minnesota:

  • Mount Josephine Rest Area improvement, Highway 61, Cook County, $450,000
  • Sign replacement, Interstate 35, $900,000

    Northwestern Minnesota:

  • Rapid River bridge work, Highway 11, Clementson to border of Lake of the Woods and Koochiching counties, $1.3 million.
  • Warroad River bridge rehab, Highway 11, Warroad, $190,000
  • Surfacing, culvert and turn lane work, Highway 200 from Highway 64 to Highway 371, north of Walker, $1.45 million
  • Road improvements, Highway 200 from border of Hubbard and Cass counties to Highway 371 north of Walker, $380,000
  • Interchange work, Interstate 94 at 34th Street South, Moorhead, $428,000

    North-central Minnesota:

  • Sign replacement, Interstate 94, Highway 15 near St. Cloud to the border of Douglas and Todd counties southwest of Alexandria, $500,000

    Western Minnesota:

  • Right-of-way purchase for Highway 23 Paynesville bypass, $2.95 million
  • Road widening and regrading, Highway 19, Marshall, $2.47 million
