Hastings VFW earns awards

Lyle Russell Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1210 is a local veterans service organization based in Hastings. During the VFW Department of Minnesota State Convention, held in Rochester June 8-12, VFW Post 1210 was recognized in four categories: first place for community service record book contest, category 1; second place for outstanding post youth activities program and reporting; third place for post safety program; and the “Best of the Best” for their support of the Hastings-based National Guard Unit, the 434th Chemical Company.

“Our post and its auxiliary have set a high standard for other VFW posts and community organizations to achieve particularly in the area of veteran and military support programs,” said VFW Post 1210 Veteran Service Officer Dean Markuson.

The post was also recognized by the VFW National Headquarters as one of the “Adopt-a-Unit’s Best of the Best.” The post was added into this elite group for conducting three or more different events on behalf of their adopted unit’s, families and youth before, during and after the unit’s deployment.

Commander Louis J. Plevell credits the post’s achievements to its membership, local government leadership, local businesses and Hastings residents for their continuous support of VFW programs.

“Post 1210 remains committed to taking care of veterans, recruiting new members to preserve the post’s legacy which started in 1929 and continuing to promote veteran and community support activities,” he said, which he believes is why the organization exist.

The VFW understands the importance of community service and partnerships with schools, churches, youth programs, hospitals, blood donor programs and civic projects. Each year, local VFWs and their auxiliaries donate numerous hours and monetary donations in support of their local veterans, youth and numerous other community service projects.

Post 1210 welcomes new members and invites them to visit the post during their hours of operation on Wednesday or Saturday at 275 West 33rd Street (Crossroad Mall) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to get involved. For more information, contact Dean Markuson at or 651-438-2208.
