We're No. 27! Hastings breaks through NerdWallet rankings on list of employment hotspots for millenials
Hastings has all kinds of claims to fame. The famed Spiral Bridge. Craig Kilborn graduated from high school here. Mark Steven Johnson, the man who wrote the Grumpy Old Men series, is a native. Terry Redlin lived here for a while.
Now residents can add a whopper to that list. The city is ranked No. 27 in the midwest for "Best Places for Millenial Job Seekers" according to www.nerdwallet.com.
The website explains its comprehensive rankings this way:
"When it comes to jobs, the Midwest has an ample crop of opportunities. The unemployment rate in America’s heartland has consistently been lower than the country as a whole. In March, the jobless rate was 5%, the lowest for all regions and 0.5% below the national unemployment rate.
"For college graduates and others who want to move to the Midwest or stay there, deciding where to live can be difficult, since it’s made up of 10 states and 124 metro regions. To help narrow the search, NerdWallet crunched the numbers to find the best places for jobs in the Midwest.NerdWallet’s analysis
"Millennial population. We looked at the percentage of residents who are millennials and the population growth of that demographic from 2010 to 2013.
"Average income. Millennials are the 18-34 age group, but because of data limitations, we examined the average income for residents ages 25-44 as a proxy for the earning potential for young workers.
"Unemployment. We looked at unemployment rates of residents ages 20 to 44, which is an indicator of the economic opportunities for young workers."
Their study determined the best place for millenials seeking work is West Fargo, N.D. They had a score of 80.22.
Hastings comes in at 27th with a population of 22,344, of which 23 percent are millenials. The city had a growth of 33 percent in millenial population from 2010 to 2013 and an unemployment rate of 9.5 percent for those in the 20-44 age group. The average income for ages 25-44 is $64,797. Hastings had a score of 67.54.
