Hastings Relay for Life raises more than $36,000

The 20th annual Hastings Relay for Life was a very successful one, organizers said.

The Aug. 1 walk to raise awareness and funds for education and research to fight cancer raised more than $36,000.

Seventeen teams with more than 150 participants walked around the lower student lot at Hastings High School. Many bought luminaries in honor or in memory of loved ones. Rain cut the walk short this year.

Organizers thanked those who assisted in helping to make this year’s event successful, including Mayor Paul Hicks, Jay Kochendorfer, Sheila Jones, Katy Fischgrabe, Linda Kampa and Joanne Schommer. Boy Scouts led the first lap followed by the survivors’ walk.

Individuals honored for raising the most funds were Bonnie Birnstengel, $3,440; Mary Tobias, $3,110; and Kathy Horsch, $1,410. Team honors went to Kathy Crusaders, $7,800; Regina Medical Centerpedes, $4,010; and Tumornators, $3,020.77.

Horsch was honored this year for her years of being a participant and team captain.

In its 20 years, the Hastings Relay for Life has raised more than $1 million.
