Deluge of rain leaves area rivers running rapid

The raging Vermillion River in Hastings brought kayakers out to Hastings on Thurdsay afternoon. The river is a popular spot for kayakers in the spring, but typically by now the river isn't running quite as fast.

That changed this week, of course, as several more inches of rain fell overnight and into Thursday morning. More rain is expected to fall Thursday evening.

Tony Locken of Chaska drove to Hastings to kayak on the river Thursday. He said that summer kayaking here, while rare, is far more enjoyable than the kayaking in the spring because the water temperatures are higher. He was planning on traveling to the North Shore of Minnesota this weekend to hit the whitewater rapids there.

The Mississippi River in Hastings is expected to reach flood stage by Friday.

The National Weather Service is warning Twin Cities residents to stay out of rivers and streams.
