Turn porch lights on tonight for girls killed in Prescott crash

A Prescott area woman is building a network of support for the families of three girls who were killed in a crash Dec. 12.

Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove said in a news conference Kari Millberg, 32, Centuria, Wis., was southbound on Hwy. 35, driving a 2005 Saturn Vue, when it rotated sideways across the roadway into the path of a northbound straight truck. The truck collided with the rear of the Vue in the northbound lane. The crash was in the area of Highway 35 and 468th Street, south of Prescott, Wis.

There were five people in the vehicle. One girl died at the scene and two others died later at the hospital. There are two survivors who were also hospitalized. The driver had two children with her, one of whom died. The other two victims were both nieces of the driver.

Courtney Swanson, a mother of two, lives near where the accident happened. She didn't know the families of those involved in the crash, but she felt she needed to do something to help them.

"As a mom, you feel helpless," she said.

She launched a Facebook campaign to get people in the surrounding communities and across the nation to show their support for the families mourning the loss of three children. The goal was to have as many people as possible turn on their porch lights at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20. The porch light vigil was an idea she had seen in other events, she said, and it was something simple that people could do to show support.

Swanson isn't alone in her empathy for the families.

"(Moms) feel this hurt, and we sympathize with them because it's unbearable and unimaginable," she said.

Swanson launched the Facebook event page Monday. As of Thursday, more than 8,300 people had committed to turning their lights on for the girls. Lights will be on in all 50 states, and at least 22 other countries as well, as the event spread. More than 64,000 invitations have been sent.
