Dancing 2k planned in Hastings June 22

Get ready to get your dance on - for a mile and a half. Black Dirt Theater is holding a "Dancing 2K," a unique event to raise funds for the community theater's upcoming production of "Annie."

The idea came out of one of Black Dirt's brainstorming meetings. One of the members suggested holding a walk-a-thon, which spurred another member to suggest something even better: a dance-a-thon. But it's pretty common for people to stand around dancing, so Black Dirt mixed the two ideas together and came up with the Dancing 2K.

"How fun would it be to see a bunch of people dancing down the street?" said Libby Wasylik, Black Dirt's executive director.

And that's exactly what they'll do. Participants will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, in the parking lot by the Allina clinic, at the intersection of Pleasant Drive and Nininger Road. Those already registered will sign in, and people can register when they arrive. At 9 a.m., the Black Dirt fire truck will lead the way down the street, blasting music for the dancers. The route will take participants down Nininger Road, down the hill onto Lock and Dam Road and into Jaycee Park. Dogs are also welcome, as long as they're kept on a leash.

Joining the dance-a-thon will be some characters from the musical, "Annie." Participants are also invited to dance in costume. There's no theme, so any type of costume is welcome. Once the group passes the finish line in Jaycee Park, prizes will be awarded for best dressed dancer, best dressed team, best original dance move and most donations raised.

Also at the finish line will be cookies and water. The event is expected to finish at about 11 a.m.

The event is designed as a fundraiser, but more than that, it's a way to give people something to smile about, even if they're not participating.

"The hope is just to get as many people involved as possible," Wasylik said. "... It's just fun."

To register for the Dancing 2K, go to Participants can print off a PDF donation pledge form for supporters to sign, or those who want to support a dancer can pledge on the website. The cost to participate is $10 if pre-registered or $15 for same-day registration.

Participants are welcome to walk if they don't want to dance the whole route, and spectators are also welcome. For more information, go to
