Pawn record leads to charge

A Hastings Police investigator checking pawn records in a residential burglary this spring has led to a charge of receiving stolen property ($1,000 to $5,000) against 24-year-old Donald Allen Sherry Jr. of Hastings.

According to the criminal complaint, the investigator observed that an individual had pawned many pieces of jewelry at a West St. Paul pawn shop. The jewelry matched many of the items taken in a burglary. When police talked to the individual, he indicated he and Sherry had gone to the shop. He had received no payment for them.

In a statement to police Sherry denied any involvement with the stolen jewelry and changed his story many times. He finally admitted he had obtained the jewelry from another individual and was paid some cash for them. Sherry said he left two unsold rings in his vehicle and said he would return them.
