Primary election results: Slavik and Fogarty advance in county commissioner race

The race for the soon-to-be vacant county commissioner race in the Hastings area has been narrowed to two candidates after a primary election on Tuesday.

Mike Slavik and Christy Jo Fogarty were the top two vote-getters in the primary, so they will be on the ballot in November. The seat has been held for some 30 years by Joe Harris, who is retiring.

Slavik led the way with 42 percent of the vote. Fogarty had 25 percent.

Mark Henry earned 22 percent, Brian Budenski had eight percent and Dean Birnstengel had four percent.

In the city council primary for Ward 1, incumbent Tony Alongi advanced with 61 percent of the vote. He will be opposed on the ballot by Mike Grady, who had 22 percent.

Justin Westman had 16 percent of the vote.

Turnout at the polls was light. In Ward 1, for example, Alongi garnered 154 votes. Grady had 56 and Westman had 41.
