Dakota County seat is Hastings

The Dakota County Government Center is located along Highway 55 in Hastings.

Hastings is proud to be the county seat for Dakota County. It is a designation that wasn't easy for the city to earn or hold on to, as it had a bitter dispute with the City of Farmington to earn the right. Hastings has been the county seat since 1857.

The county now employs more than 2,000 people in the area, and the main county government center is located in Hastings.

Housed here are the administration buildings, judicial center, juvenile service center and the law enforcement center.

The administration center is well-used by the county's residents. It

handles driver's license renewals, birth certificates, marriage licenses, passport applications and voter registration, among other things.

Dakota County's size is expansive, covering 593 square miles. It is the third most populated county in Minnesota with approximately 400,000 residents.

Dakota County's population grew

rapidly between 1990 and 2000, when it shot up by 30 percent.

The county was formed in 1849, when the Minnesota Territory legislature created nine original counties, including Dakota.
