Schools are leaders in music and theater

The crown jewel of the Hastings schools is the Hastings High School, built in 2001. The facility was built for $43.6 million and is located north of Highway 55 on General Sieben Drive.

Hastings' public school system has always carried a strong reputation, but when the new $43.6 million Hastings High School campus opened in fall 2001, the district got even better.

The facility stands north of Highway 55 at General Sieben Drive.

The campus features a three-level building, totaling 373,600 square feet, a new outdoor athletic complex, a state-of-the-art media center, a 68,180 square-foot physical education wing and field house, and a breath-taking auditorium like no other in the state.

The hallmark of the school is its main commons area, situated just inside the lower entrance. The commons covers 21,500 square feet and serves as the social center of the campus. It's used as a cafeteria during lunch periods, a connection between students and faculty, and an overflow room during indoor athletic contests. A large bridge, resembling the Hastings Highway 61 bridge, stretches over the commons area, connecting the upper levels.

Over the years, Hastings public schools has been a leader in the areas of music and theater, and a special committee was formed to make sure that trend continued. The committee spent the better portion of a year coming up with ideas for an auditorium like no other. What it came up with was a 14,540 square-foot, 1,000-seat facility featuring an all-glass entrance, spiral staircase, a spacious main floor and elevated side aisles, which extend from the lower to upper level.

Middle School

The previous Hastings High School at 11th and Pine streets was renovated and converted into the Hastings Middle School campus beginning with the 2001-02 school year. The move opened up additional space and a variety of educational opportunities for students.
