Softball team falls to Park

Jordan Schaffer gets ready at the plate during Hastings' game against Park last week, Schaffer had a solo home run for the Raiders in the 4-1 loss.

After Thursday's 4-1 loss to Park, the Hastings softball team gathered around coach Dean Robinson.

It was a critical part of the season. The Raiders had won their first 10 games, then suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Wolfpack.

"I told the girls, it was pretty sweet to be talking about our first loss in our 11th game of the season," Robinson said. "I just told them not to lose that winning spirit, and we'll just get back on track and do it all over again. We need to be in our prime at the end of the season, not now."

The team must have listened. On Monday, Hastings got right back into the win column with a 5-1 Suburban East Conference victory over Cretin-Derham Hall.

Vs Park

Wolfpack pitcher Ashley Kleuver dominated the game against the Raiders.

She struck out 15 Hastings batters.

"We just couldn't lay off the high outside pitch," Robinson said. "That was her go-to pitch. We weren't patient enough to hold off on it."

Kleuver walked five Hastings batters, but the total could have been higher, Robinson suspects.

"I think if we were a little more patient on that high outside pitch, she would have walked even more."

Park scored two runs in the third inning, and then added two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.

The lone Hastings run came in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Jordan Schaffer.

Vs Cretin

Jenelle Trautmann had a great game as the Hastings pitcher against Cretin-Derham Hall on Monday. She struck out 10 batters and allowed just three hits.

"She pitched really well, and had some good defense behind her," Robinson said.

"It was good to get back on the winning track and play the kind of ball we are used to playing," Robinson said. "It was a nice team performance, and we got some nice pitching from Jenelle."

Cretin scored a run in the first inning, but from then on it was all Hastings.

In the second inning, Treya Connell drew a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. She scored on a double by Marissa Holmes.

In the third inning, Hastings took the lead. Britt Robinson singled, moved to second, thanks to Linnea Haler, and scored on a double by Schaffer.

In the sixth, Schaffer walked and moved up a base when Connell reached on an error. Holmes walked to load the bases. Kaitlin Stark came up and hit a ball to the shortstop, who bobbled it. Schaffer scored and Hastings had a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh, the Raiders added two more runs.

Robinson reached on a single and moved up to second. Schaffer walked and Trautmann knocked in Robinson. Connell singled to move up Schaffer.

Holmes knocked in Schaffer.

Robinson had two hits on the day. Holmes had two hits and one RBI. Connell had two hits and a walk. Schaffer had one hit, one RBI and two walks.
