Country club to play host to Minnesota State Open

For the first time in 29 years, the Minnesota State Open golf tournament will not be held at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

Rather, it will be held right here, at the Hastings Country Club.

"It's going to be a pretty big deal for us," HCC golf pro Brad Schmierer said last week.

The tournament is planned for July 24-26.

One hundred sixty of the top amateurs and pros from Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota will compete in the tournament. Each will have qualified through a tournament in their respective areas.

I'll do my best to bring you more information on the tournament as it draws closer.

More good stuff:

• Brandon Boyd is playing college baseball at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter this year.

Boyd, a Hastings native, is a sophomore for the Gusties. The team has a 9-9 record overall and a 2-0 mark in the MIAC so far.

Boyd has started 12 games so far. He is an outfielder.

He's joined on the team by fellow sophomore Mitch Johnson, a catcher.

In three games, he has four at-bats and two hits.

• Nick Ross and David Schutt are teammates on the Gustavus College men's track and field team.

Ross is a distance runner.

Schutt is a sprinter.

Both are Hastings High graduates.

• Judd Connell, Hastings, is wrestling at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.

He is a marine transportation major.

• Tyler Corrington is a saddle bronc riding cowboy traveling the United States on the rodeo circuit. He's from Hastings, and was the 2006 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Resistol Saddle Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year.

• David McCook shot a 77 and an 80 at the United States Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship last fall at the Shady Oaks Country Club in Forth Worth, Texas.

He plays out of Hastings Country Club.

• Once you finish reading this compelling and relevant column and turn to Page 2B, you're going to be in for quite a surprise.

We're going to try something fun with the top of our second sports page. It will be one big photo, spread out across the entire width of the page.

One more piece of housekeeping: Next week, we'll happily bring you our spring sports preview section, which will include preview stories on all the spring sports at Hastings High School.
