Boys Basketball: Raiders in the midst of section tournament play

It's section tournament time for the Hastings boys basketball team.

On Wednesday night, the Raiders traveled to Owatonna for the first round of the Class 4A Section 1 tournament against the Huskies.

Results of the game were not available at press time.

Hastings earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament with an 11-15 record. Owatonna is the No. 3 seed, holding a 17-9 record.

Should Hastings have won Wednesday, they'll play at 8:15 p.m. Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center against the winner of the Northfield/Rochester John Marshall game.

The section finals are scheduled Friday, March 20, in Rochester.

Vs. Forest Lake

Hastings closed out the regular season Friday night with a 59-46 loss to Forest Lake.

The game was tied 37-37 with eight minutes to play, but from that point on, Forest Lake outscored Hastings 22-9 to secure the win.

"Forest Lake is an 18-win team, and they're the No. 1 seed in Section 7," HHS coach Trent Hanson said. "Ultimately, we were overmatched at spots.

"We played with great effort, and we held them to 14 points under their average. We just couldn't get enough offense to get past them. It wasn't necessarily just one thing."

Hastings was led in scoring by Nick Gmiterko, who had 16. Karl Sorg added 13.

"Nick has battled some illness stuff this year, but he's had a really productive last couple of weeks here," Hanson said. "Karl is playing the best basketball of his career. Thirteen (points) is a career high for him. He had nine rebounds to go with it.

"They both played very well against Forest Lake."

Scoring for Hastings went like this: Michael Hill 4, Dan Clanton 3, Devon LaCoursiere 3, Jake Ryan 7, Nick Gmiterko 16, and Karl Sorg 13.
