Week No. 16 • Green Mill

Green Mill in Hastings can deliver its entire menu to your doorstep, if you so choose. This week, we feature the Blaze Burger, which was delivered Saturday, just in time for college football.1 / 2

There's something great about Saturdays in the fall. College football is on TV and guys like me just want to head to the Green Mill Restaurant, space out for a couple hours, get a burger and watch the game.

And that's exactly what I would have done at lunchtime on Saturday, had there not been a sleeping little boy in my house. The solution? Stay home and order out. For burgers.

From the comfort of my sofa, I dialed 438-9191, ordered the Blaze Burger and about 30 minutes later, a kind lady delivered the burger to my doorstep. I had to actually get off the couch to pay, but other than that, I didn't have to move much.

The burger was still piping hot. I had worried the fries were going to be a soggy mess. They weren't.

So, there I sat on my couch, eating like a king. The Blaze Burger features bacon, pepper jack cheese, Monterey jack cheese, haystack onions and chipotle mayo. It was $9.99, and came to just more than $13 with tax and delivery.

The burger was good and spicy, just the way I like 'em. And as for the game, Ohio State beat Michigan, so my wife was in a good mood the rest of the weekend.

Thankfully, I didn't watch the Gophers game later in the day.

There are nine burgers on the menu, including the fun Mini Mill Burgers. There are three mini sliders served on a panoramic platter. You basically get three unique miniature-sized burgers and fries for $10.49.

If burgers aren't your thing, it's not a problem at Green Mill. Their menu is huge. Everything from deep dish pizza, pastas, salads, wings, calzones, pot roast and walleye is covered.

About the Green Mill

The first Green Mill Inn opened in the 1930s at the intersection of Grand and Hamline avenues in St. Paul.

The location was purchased in 1975 and quickly became known as the best place to go for pizza. In 1979, a second location was opened, this one in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis.

Today, there are more than 30 Green Mill locations throughout the Midwest.

The Hastings location is managed by Tim O'Brien.

Regina Medical Center dietician Christina Gapp looked over Green Mill's menu and had this to say about healthful options there:

"The Green Mill is a great place to hang out with family and friends, day or night, for meetings or for relaxation and you can meet your nutritional goals as well. What? Who thinks about eating healthy at the Green Mill, you say?

For those of you who don't want to ruin your good efforts during the upcoming holidays, as well as those who want good food and nutrition at the same time, Green Mill offers an "Eating Fit" menu.

Some menu items fit the bill for healthy eating, such as the Thai Chicken Salad or Cilantro Lime Shrimp Salad. Are you in the mood for pizza? How about the wheat crust ... or a low-cal chicken pizza? Order half the cheese and double the veggies.

It's possible that you struggle to limit your portion sizes and the leftover pizza is calling your name. Perhaps you can try a different meal-time strategy. On the take-out menu, you could order pizza by the slice or pizza and a salad. Instead of eating inside, you (and your family) can exercise for an hour and get your food "to go," go home and enjoy in your own relaxed environment."
