Week No. 13 Burger King
Ever heard of this place? It's called Burger King. It's located in south Hastings and it sells, among other things, burgers!
Well, they have this big burger called the Whopper. They've served a couple since 1957.
It had actually been a while since I'd had a Whopper. It comes with a quarter-pound patty, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, pickles and onions. I got it my way for $3.41 on Monday.
As always, I was reminded why the sandwich is named so. The thing is as big as ever. With every bite, ingredients spilled out of the burger and onto the wrapper.
If you spend any time in south Hastings around lunchtime or dinnertime, you've no doubt smelled BK flame-broiling its burgers.
One of their latest creations is the Loaded Steakhouse Burger. They take a 100 percent Angus beef patty and top it with crispy onions, baked potato topping, bacon, A1 sauce and a slice of American cheese. Hope you're hungry!
Don't like burgers?
So, it's breakfast, and you're hungry. Like, really hungry. You hit Burger King and you get the Enormous Omelet Sandwich: six strips of bacon, sausage, two slices of cheese, eggs and one huge bun. No problem. Just don't eat much the rest of the day! You just threw down 730 calories and you had 45 grams of fat.
But that's not to say everything there is taboo. Over the years, BK has added everything from salads to apple fries.
The grilled chicken garden salad has 340 calories if you include the light Italian dressing.

Regina Medical Center dietician Christina Gapp looked over Burger King's menu and had this to say about healthful options there:
"Have any of you received money from the 'King'? You know, the reverse pick-pocketer in the commercials? In this economy, we all see prices of gas dropping, but not food prices! How can we eat well while maintaining our budget? Many of us go 'out' for fast food instead of going to expensive restaurants.
"Burger King seems to hurt the pocket book less.
"Keep in mind that you have a job to nourish the body as well as the appetite. Here are some tips for your trip to Burger King:
"First, realize that a small order of onion rings has less sodium, fat, and calories than an small order of fries. A junior Whopper with cheese, compared to a Whopper with cheese, has 300 fewer calories and about half the fat. Drink lowfat milk or a 12-ounce vanilla shake instead of soda, for a nutritious boost.
"Eat salads without the added chicken to save fat and sodium calories. Try applesauce or juice when low on fruit intake. In the morning, have a croissan'wich with egg and cheese, without added meats, for a better way to start the day. If sodium is not a concern, try the veggie burger as an alternate to your hamburger.
"The 'King' is a lean, active guy. If we shake a leg and get active, we boost our metabolism, feel better, and make better health choices."
