Open skate schedule

Open skate sessions at Hastings Civic Arena runs through September. The September schedule for public skating is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The public skating schedule is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 11, 18 and 25; 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27; 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, Aug. 8, 15, 22, 29 and from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Fridays, Aug. 8 and 15.

The public hockey schedule is from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 6 and 13 and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 20 and 27; 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, Aug. 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Couples golf tournament

Hastings Country Club will host a couples Labor Day weekend tournament Saturday, Sept. 2, at the country club.

The tournament will be a couple one net best ball of two format which uses a 90-percent handicap.

The tournament gets under way with a 1:15 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $72.50 per person and includes golfing, a cart, prizes, dinner and a dance.

The dinner and the dance will be a tribute to Johnny Cash theme with music by Six Mile Grove performed with Bob Wooten, a former guitar player with Cash.

HAST fall program tryouts and registration set

Tryouts and registration for the HAST fall swimming program will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 14 and 16 at the Hastings Middle School pool.

Tryouts and registration will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Free evaluations are available for parents unsure of their child's ability level. During tryouts, participants' swimming skills will be evaluated. A recommendation will be given to where a child fits into the HAST program. (Please have your child in a swimsuit and allow for extra time.)

The HAST "I love to swim" lesson program holds classes for children ages 3 and up. The program utilizes the four Olympic strokes. Classes and meets are held at both the Hastings AmericInn and middle school pools.

The HAST competitive team offers instruction and training for children ages 7 and up. All practices during the fall/winter season are held at the middle school. HAST swimmers compete once or twice a month with other swimmers of similar age and ability.

Hastings varsity soccer

youth camp

The Hastings High School girls soccer team will put on a youth camp from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 16, at the high school soccer fields.

The camp is for girls in grades kindergarten to sixth grade. The cost of the camp is $25 and participants receive a T-shirt, a girls varsity game ticket and Subway coupon.

The camp focuses on foot skills, teamwork, positive attitude and the importance of good nutrition.

Traveling basketball

coaches needed

Coaches for the Hastings boys and girls traveling teams are needed for the 2006-07 season for grades five to eight.

Teams participate in seven weekend tournaments, starting in December and running until mid-March.

Selection of the coaches will take place by application and those interested in applying should do so by the Sept. 30 deadline. Applications, with instructions, are available at the Hastings Basketball Boosters Web site, at

Youth basketball sign-ups

Registration for in-house and traveling basketball for grades two through eigh is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 23, in the Hastings Middle School gym.

In-house basketball is for grades two to eight, while traveling basketball is only for grades five to eight.

Parents and coaches are encouraged to submit youth sports pictures and news to the Hastings Star Gazette. E-mail pictures and information to Deadline for youth submissions is noon each Monday for the following Thursday's paper.
