Go swimming in Hastings for $3 (or $4)

It's Spring Break and families around you are heading to Miami or San Diego. They're at the beach and you keep seeing their photos of blue water and sandy beaches. Your kids want to go swimming.

Your only option is to send them into the puddle that has formed in the backyard because of the recent snowmelt.

We're here to tell you, though, that isn't your only option.

You can take them to one of two hotels here in Hastings and get them swimming for as little as $3.

You don't have to stay the night. You don't have to drive out of town. Just head over to the Country Inn and Suites next to Burger King, or to the AmericInn on Vermillion Street, and they'll let you use their pool for a nominal fee.

At each location, there are some things to keep in mind. Here's what you need to know about each:

Swimming at the AmericInn for area residents is $3 per swim.

Single members can buy a 15-swim pass for $30. Families can buy a 15-swim pass for $50.

The hours are from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Things to keep in mind: Swim lessons are held at the AmericInn on Mondays and Wednesdays from about 4 p.m. until about 7:30 p.m. and during that time the pool is closed to the public.

Some weekends, too, the hotel gets busy and hotel guests may fill the pool. When that occurs, the hotel will not be open for public swimming.

It's probably a good idea to call ahead, especially on the weekends. They can be reached locally at 651-437-8877.

There is one bathroom and a shower that can be used for changing before or after swimming.

A hottub is also on site.

The AmericInn is located at 2400 Vermillion St.

Country Inn and Suites

The Country Inn and Suites has a $4 charge for swimmers. There is a monthly pass available for $20.

An unlimited monthly family pass is $35.

The fee does not include towels.

Users are asked to check in to the front desk at the hotel before getting in to the pool.

The hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Residents are asked to not bring food into the pool area.

Just like the AmericInn, there are times when the Country Inn is full of guests, and when that is the case, the hotel will many times be closed to the public.

Calling ahead, especially on weekends, is a good idea. Their phone number is 651-437-8870.

The Country Inn's address is 300 33rd St.

There is a bathroom and shower in the pool area.
