Seniors: Need help with your taxes? AARP Tax Aide will assist seniors
Need help with your 2010 taxes?
As it has for many years, ARRP is offering free assistance to senior citizens in Hastings. Appointments can be scheduled beginning next week. Trained volunteers provide the assistance. Appointments will be available on two days a week through April 13.
Appointments can be made for Monday evenings at the Hastings Area Senior Center, 213 Ramsey St., and during the day on Tuesdays at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 W. Ninth St. Do not call the church for an appointment.
When people come to their appointments, they should bring the current year's tax forms and preparation booklets; W-2 forms from each employer; SSA-1099 forms for paid Social Security payments; all 1099 forms that show interest and/or dividends, and documentation showing original purchase of sold assets; 1099-misc., showing any miscellaneous income; all forms indicating federal income tax paid; a 1099-R form if there is a pension or annuity; dependent care provider information; all receipts or canceled checks if itemizing deductions; Social Security card or other official documentation for yourself and all dependents.
Those needing help with their property taxes are asked, if possible, to wait to make their appointments for the end of March. Property tax statements are not mailed to property owners until March.
AARP Tax Aide is the nation's largest free volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service. It began in 1968 with four volunteers. There are approximately 34,600 volunteers today who are trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
The AARP program is offered at about 6,500 locations throughout the country. Electronic filing is offered at most sites, with no charge to the taxpayer.
To make an appointment for the Hastings locations, call the senior center at 438-0750.
