City to sponsor Youth Triathlon on Aug. 27
The City of Hastings will sponsor a Youth Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 27. Hastings Family Aquatics Center will host the event, which includes swimming, biking, and running.
The Triathlon is for children ages 5-14, with two age groups for 5-9 and 10-14.
"There are so many adult races and since [Hastings] has a pool, we thought it would be fun to do a youth triathlon," said Jared Flewellen, Recreation Coordinator for the City of Hastings.
Age group 5 to 9 will swim 25 meters, bike two miles, and run one mile. Participants ages 10 to 14, will swim 50 meters, bike four miles, and run two miles.
Participants will start the triathlon at the Hastings Family Aquatics Center with the swimming portion. From there they will bike to Conzemius Park, where there will be a water table set up. The biking portion will continue back to HFAC.
Contestants will continue the triathlon by running to the Hastings Middle School track and back, with10-14 year olds completing the extra mile around the track.
"The Triathlon is all professionally timed. The participants will get to see how fast they swam, ran, biked, and what their transition times were, all broken up. [The Youth Triathlon] is competitive but its about having fun too," said Flewellen.
Each participant will receive a prize bag that includes a T-shirt, day pass for HFAC and a medal. Age groups will be separated by year and medals will be awarded to the winners.
"We hope this ends up being a large event that can continue on throughout the years. It's about getting kids outside, moving, and staying healthy and active," said Flewellen.
