Brothers plan fundraiser for breast cancer support

Brothers Rory and Sean McCabe are working together to offer a fun time for the community and raise some funds for the Hastings Breast Cancer Support Group.

The second annual Fitness for Survival - "giving breast cancer a run for its money, literally," will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Celt's Pub. A tent dance is scheduled for later the same day. Celt's is hosting the event, and sponsors are Uptown Fitness and MGM Liquors.

"I wanted to do something good for the community of Hastings and give something back," Rory McCabe said.

He learned of the Hastings Breast Cancer Support Group through his fitness gym and contacted Mickey O'Connor last year. With some help from O'Connor, who died from the disease several months later, the McCabes initiated a 5K run/walk.

The event also featured a strongman competition and yard games tournament. About 80 people participated.

The 5K run/walk will begin at Celt's, and continue east by Hastings Middle School and Pinecrest Elementary School, and then head south at Prairie and 14th streets near the ponding basin. The run/walk will continue along the walking path by Louis Lane, Hastings Country Club and Southview Drive. Participants will head north along Westview Drive to South Frontage Road and back to Celt's. The route is about three miles.

The walk/run is for all ages, with an entry fee of $20 for those 16 and older, and $15 for those younger than 16. T-shirts are included in the fee. Race numbers and shirts will be available beginning at 9 a.m. June 13 at Celt's.

The yard games tournament for those 21 and older begins at noon and includes ladder golf and beanbag toss. This is a winner-take-all tournament. The games will be judged and played according to rules given before each game is played. Prizes will be awarded.

A number of door prizes will be presented throughout the day.

A tent dance will be held outside Celt's from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Evan Olson of Rivertown Sound LLC will provide the DJ entertainment for the evening. Several area bands are also scheduled to perform.

All proceeds from the fees and the cover charge for the dance will go to the Hastings Breast Cancer Support Group.

"We want to have an annual event in Hastings to recognize this organization and show how we are able to help on a local level by fostering a sense of community through fitness and fun," Sean McCabe said.
