Lawrence graduates from the U of New Hampshire

Chad Lawrence of Hastings graduated from the University of New Hampshire during the commencement ceremony held Saturday, May 16, 2015, on the Durham, N.H. campus. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

Hisakuni graduates from Macalester

Kohei Hisakuni of Hastings graduated from Macalester during a ceremony held on campus on May 16. Hisakuni received a liberal arts degree in computer science. Hisakuni is a graduate of Hastings Senior High School and the son of Sandra Hisakuni.

Kelly graduates from Loyola University

Paige Kelly of Hastings graduated from Loyola University Chicago, Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, on May 6 in Chicago.

Kelly received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing graduated with academic honors. She was also recognized as a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honors Society. She is the daughter of Mike and Deb Kelly.

Hastings students named to Saint Mary’s dean’s list

The following students from Hastings were named to the second semester, 2014-15 dean’s list at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota: Lindsey Reinisch, daughter of Jayme and Lisa Reinisch;  Abigail Zuzek, daughter of Mark and Janet Zuzek; Alexander Zuzek, son of Mark and Janet Zuzek.

Students from Hastings who received Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota on May 9 in Winona are: Mackenzie Klimek and Lindsey Reinisch.

Church interns with branded beef company

Becky Church, a student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, started her summer internship with the Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) Industry Information Division this week. The junior in ag education - communications and leadership, with minors in animal science and ag food business management, works out of her home in Hastings.

“I’m looking forward to meeting producers, learning the different ways they operate their herds to make the best beef possible and helping to tell their stories,” Church said.

Her passion for agriculture was fueled by her involvement in 4-H and FFA, where she showed cattle, lambs and hogs. Before joining the CAB team, Church served as an intern for BEEF Magazine where she helped manage the Cow-Calf Weekly newsletter, write articles and blogs and post for social media. She also interned with a local photographer last summer, and currently blogs for Ranch House Designs, Inc. As a CAB intern, Church writes news releases, features, technical articles and blogs, working with company journalists in Florida, Kansas and Nebraska. Her summer will include time on the road to capture photographs and ranch feature stories in the northern corn belt.

McGrath will participate in the NRA’s YES Program

Nicky McGrath, a junior at Hastings High School, was selected to participate in the National Rifle Association’s annual National Youth Education Summit (YES). YES Is a seven-day, expense paid educational experience in Washington, D.C., for outstanding rising high school juniors and seniors. While in the nation’s capital, Nick will learn the significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights while developing an understanding of government and the importance of actively participating in it.

Nick was selected from numerous qualified applicants from across the country. He was required to complete an extensive application, which included the submission of transcripts, an essay about the Second Amendment, a personal statement and three personal recommendations. The National Rifle Association launched YES in 1996 in an effort to encourage America’s youth to become active and knowledgeable citizens at both national and local levels. All funding for the program is provided by the NRA Foundation through monies raised by Friends of NRA.

Wollmering earns commencement medal

Melissa Wollmering of Hastings, was awarded the Ruane Medal for Excellence in Art at Marywood University’s 2015 commencement ceremony. The Ruane Medal was established by Hazel F. Ruane in memory of Ella T. Ruane. Wollmering is the spouse of Andrew Lazella and daughter of Mark and Pat Wollmering,

Wollmering graduated from Hastings High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art from Hamline University and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Marywood University.

Kimmes graduates from William Mitchell College of Law

Jacob Kimmes of Hastings, son of John and Shawna Kimmes, graduated from William Mitchell College of Law. Kimmes received Cum Laude honors in academics and recognition for volunteering a large amount of personal hours to help others. He is a 2008 HHS graduate.
