A new cemetery marker for a Hastings man who was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War will serve as the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend in Hastings. The annual Memorial Day observance is set for Monday, May 27.
It was nearly the end of almost two hours of speaking to students in Hastings High School teacher Scott Smallidge’s social studies class last Friday. World War II veteran Richard Carroll, who grew up near Coates, now 92, had talked about his military flying experience, being shot down, and the time spent in a prison camp in Germany.
Hastings resident Paul Bernardy knows the importance of education. Bernardy is a retired Navy/Naval Reservist and is in his fifth semester at Inver Hills Community College in Inver Grove Heights. He’s finishing up his Associate of Arts degree there and preparing to transfer into the landscape architecture program at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.
For Veteran’s Day last November, a group of third-grade students at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School sent letters to Minnesota soldiers serving in the Army in Kuwait. They didn’t get any letters back, but Monday, Jan. 9, they got an even better reply.
This week on the front page, we write about Everett Turnbull, a World War II veteran who took what he called the “trip of a lifetime” in October.
No, he didn’t go to sunny Hawaii.
No, he didn’t go on a week-long Caribbean cruise.
He went to Washington, D.C., to see, among other things, the war memorial dedicated to the battle he fought in.
