At the end of the state swimming meet on Saturday night, Hastings swimmers and coaches couldn’t believe what they were seeing – Hastings had finished fourth place at the year’s biggest meet, the best finish in school history.
Gerry Rupp has seen a lot of great talent come through his swimming program and Hastings High School, but something happened last week he doesn’t ever remember happening before.
At the section finals on Friday, Hastings qualified all three relays for the state meet.
Members of the Hastings boys swimming and diving team turned in season-best and, in some cases, lifetime best swims against East Ridge on Thursday night. That wasn’t enough, though, to beat the Raptors, who went on to win the Suburban East Conference title.
Hastings swimming coach Gerry Rupp had a lot to be excited about coming into this season. For one thing, his team, thanks to a new pool at the Hastings Middle School, was able to add a diving program again. That meant that Hastings was no longer going to be forced to forfeit those points every night.
