Letter: Benefits of marriage should be extended to same-sex couples
I recently saw a billboard near the I-494 bridge in South St. Paul that features a black bride and groom. The billboard is one of several around the state that was paid for by Minnesota for Marriage, a group that wants to define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Letter: Vote ‘No’ to protect our free and open society
The Oct. 11 issue of the Hastings Star Gazette had an editorial-like “Pastor’s Corner” article in the Faith section of the newspaper. Randy Berg’s opinions on the proposed marriage amendment ignore the fundamental affect of the marriage amendment on Minnesotans, if it passes.

We own Hub’s Landing & Marina, a small business sitting at the foot of the Hastings bridge project. In the spring of 2011, MnDOT raised the elevation of a road, disrupting water drainage from our parking lot, resulting in big puddles and lots of mud.

Marriage is the union of two people committed to each other. It creates a family. This union is brought about because of love, commitment and support. It is a cementing of a basic need of all individuals.

Letter: Superficial banter needs to be ignored
Recently, a letter was written about the presidential campaign being superficial. While I agreed that the superficiality exists, I did not agree with the rest of the letter.

There is a push under way in Minnesota to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. This action has been introduced by some in the religious community as a premise to uphold the sanctity of marriage.

Representative Pat Garofalo recently chastised Democrats on Twitter for voting to change the home mortgage deductions back in 2009 that would have made wealthy Minnesotans pay a little more taxes. That 2009 bill was vetoed, which Garofalo was happy about, because in his words it “would increase the cost of home ownership.”

Letter: Vote ‘Yes’ for marriage
When a majority of the delegates at the Democrat National convention, on a voice vote, booed (God and Jerusalem), and the overall theme of the convention was government paid abortions and birth control, I wondered what had happened to my country. With 85 percent of Americans professing to be Christians, how do we explain the coordinated attack on marriage, religion, family and our culture, the values we hold most dear.

This year is the first time in decades that we’re guaranteed to have a new county commissioner representing our district. Why is this choice important? County commissioners set tax rates, oversee the construction and maintenance of critical highways, administer courts and human services, and ensure a quick and efficient response to police and fire emergencies.

Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment, vote “Yes” or vote “No.” This is very straight forward and simple, or is it? I am not writing in today to discuss your views, your choice of lifestyle, your faith or any other factors that will sway you to make a choice on voting. Today I want to discuss “intolerance.”
