Caring for the abused in Cambodia: Led by faith, Krista Allgor volunteers to help victims of sex trafficking, slavery
It’s not always easy for Krista Allgor to talk about what she’s seen in Cambodia. Families that can’t afford food. Children working in factories to help pay their parents’ debts. Teachers asking for bribes just so they can support themselves. Parents subjecting their children to sex trafficking.

New driver in your future? Parental tips offered to ease rite-of-passage
Handing over the keys to a teenager and then riding shotgun as he or she learns the basics is hardly a recipe for a stress-free afternoon, but it’s a part of life many parents must endure sooner or later, and it’s a rite of passage for their children.

Vieth is new executive director at Carpenter Nature Center
The Carpenter Nature Center in Hastings has a new executive director. Jen Vieth was the unanimous choice of the three committees tasked with hiring a new leader for the non-profit center. The position became available earlier this year when Jim Fitzpatrick decided to retire after serving as the director for the past 32 years. Vieth is just the second executive director at the center.

Initial Hudson redevelopment plans disappoint: Concepts included residential, hotel and banquet space
It looks like it will be a while yet before the former Hudson building in downtown Hastings is redeveloped. Last Thursday, the Hastings Economic Development and Redevelopment Authority, which owns the building, reviewed three redevelopment concept plans for the building, but none of them were particularly attractive to commissioners present. Only Pam Holzem, Ron Toppin and Anthony Alongi were at the meeting. Because there was no quorum, the meeting was held as a workshop and no formal action was taken.

Letter: Go see Black Dirt Theater’s ‘Resurrection’
I had the opportunity to attend Black Dirt Theater’s production of The Sound of Music” last summer. Up until that time, I thought of community theater as a chance for amateurs to have some fun on the stage, resulting in performances high on enthusiasm but low in quality.

Osberg's final day as city administrator is Friday
In March of 1989, Dave Osberg took a new job. He had been working in St. James when the city administrator position in Hastings opened up. City Hall had a much different dynamic back then. There was significant unrest in the council prior to Osberg’s hiring, and it continued in some measure into the first part of his career here. Anyone who came into his position would have had a tough time, Osberg said.

Everyday Hero: Sarah Wasvick
About four years ago, Sarah Wasvick’s son Taylor took to the football field for the Hastings Raiders. Wasvick wanted to help, and one thing she figured she could do was snap a few photos for the players. She wanted better photos of her sons, so she began clicking away and hasn’t looked back, spending her Friday nights in the fall running up and down the field with camera in hand. She’s continued the work, even though she no longer has a son on the team.

Communication lacking during snow emergency: More than 130 vehicles cited, 25 towed in March 4 snowfall
In early March, an overnight snowstorm meant an unpleasant surprise for Hastings resident Jane Snyder. Weather reports had been predicting snow, so Snyder watched the news to see if there were going to be any school closings or snow emergencies. Seeing none, she figured she would just have to get up early to clear the vehicle off before going to work.
