Everyday Hero: Denise Kintz
Early one Monday morning, Tom Kintz and his two sons, Dob and John, were quite the spectacle in Hastings. They had a special delivery to make, and there was no way to fit their package in a vehicle. So, at about 7 a.m., the three picked up the handiwork of their mother and walked it across four lanes of traffic on Highway 61 and another three blocks to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. Their delivery? A car.

Masters of the Sky program comes to Carpenter Nature Center
Chrys, a long-crested eagle, was never supposed to come to the U.S. Long-crested eagles are native to Africa, and that’s where Chrys was hatched. But as an adult, he was trapped and brought to this country illegally, to be sold for the black market pet trade back in the 1980s. The dealers who had captured him cut off the crest his breed is named for in an attempt to get the bird past the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

So long, Sliver: Arena manager Sliver McGree to retire after 30 years on the job
Sliver McGree liked playing hockey as a youngster in Hastings. The problem, he said, was that he just wasn’t very good. “They couldn’t cut me because they didn’t have enough players,” he said. “I was what you would call a great skater – but I had no hand skills. I could chase people and keep them away from the goalie.”
