Letter: Elected officials are selling our rights to the highest bidder
I’ve been thinking about what seems to be making this country sick. What comes to mind is a time I was playing racquetball at the YMCA with a friend of mine. We were playing along, and all of a sudden these teenage kids ran into our court. They were messing around, and running all over the court.

Editorial: Vote Romney, his promise of a way forward
There’s little argument President Obama has been aggressive, bold and willing to take chances in the name of returning our nation to a place of prosperity and security. Recall his stimulus bills, the bailouts, the Affordable Care Act and even the daring mission that took out Osama bin Laden.

Letter: Against the voter ID amendment
I have been racking my brain to justify the need for having identification for the right to vote. Are we afraid of illegal immigrants voting? I’m sure they would stay far away from any polling place for fear of deportation. How about people voting in multiple places? I.D.s will not in any way prevent that and I do not feel it is a big enough issue to mess with our constitution.

Letter: Vote ‘No’ to protect our free and open society
The Oct. 11 issue of the Hastings Star Gazette had an editorial-like “Pastor’s Corner” article in the Faith section of the newspaper. Randy Berg’s opinions on the proposed marriage amendment ignore the fundamental affect of the marriage amendment on Minnesotans, if it passes.

Letter: Voting ‘No’ will protect our freedoms
Marriage is the union of two people committed to each other. It creates a family. This union is brought about because of love, commitment and support. It is a cementing of a basic need of all individuals.

Letter: Superficial banter needs to be ignored
Recently, a letter was written about the presidential campaign being superficial. While I agreed that the superficiality exists, I did not agree with the rest of the letter.

Oak Ridge quilters do it again with lap robes for nursing home, quilts for bazaar
The hands are busy cutting, tying and lining up the brightly-colored fabric squares. A shopping cart is filled the fabric remnants. The Oak Ridge quilters are working on quilts and lap robes each Monday afternoon in the community room of the complex. This year, they will have completed more than 52 lap robes for the residents of the Farmington Nursing Home. Another 65 quilts will be offered for sale at the upcoming fall bazaar (Nov. 17), with some of the proceeds designated for Hastings Family Service.

Letter: Vote ‘Yes’ for marriage
When a majority of the delegates at the Democrat National convention, on a voice vote, booed (God and Jerusalem), and the overall theme of the convention was government paid abortions and birth control, I wondered what had happened to my country. With 85 percent of Americans professing to be Christians, how do we explain the coordinated attack on marriage, religion, family and our culture, the values we hold most dear.

Keeping up the fight: Marty Caneff is 30 months into his fight with brain cancer
One morning in April 2010, Marty Caneff of Hastings had a bad headache. He couldn’t shake it, and he told his wife Margie he just didn’t feel right. Within hours, the Hastings father of three was in an ambulance on his way to United Hospital. A CAT scan had revealed a tumor on his brain. “It was horrible — It was totally horrible,” Margie Caneff said. “We didn’t know what was going to happen. That’s the day that our world changed. It was devastating, to say the least.”
