I recently adopted a dog from Braveheart Rescue in Hastings, so I was saddened to see news of its upcoming closure. People may not realize it, but the old standby for adopting unwanted animals — the local humane societies — have run into really hard times and no longer have the ability to offer many pets for adoption.
