Nick Clare run is Saturday in Hastings
In 2002, the Hastings community joined together to pay tribute to the life of Nick Clare. Clare, a Hastings native, was a senior at Montana State University in Bozeman when he lost his life in a car accident. Following his death, his family and friends organized the first annual Nick Clare Memorial Run. That initial run and those following it have been very successful in helping the Hastings community and high school. This Saturday, May 4, is the 12th annual Nick Clare Memorial Run, and proceeds from the event will go to support programs at the Hastings Area YMCA and the Nick Clare Scholarship.

Adult and youth academies scheduled - Events launch Helping Kids Succeed initiative in Hastings
It was only a generation ago when we could assume that most youth would progress successfully and painlessly through adolescence into adulthood. Our community was smaller. We knew the teens, and it seemed the vast majority made it. Sure, we remember some kids who struggled. But, as a community, we did right by our kids.

Celebrating 100 years - Hastings creamery started downtown, making butter
A lot can change in 100 years. The Hastings Cooperative Creamery Association, which last week celebrated its 100th anniversary, has seen several changes of its own, but one thing has remained at its core. “We seek to benefit our farmers,” said Dave Zwart, the plant manager. The co-op is a milk processing and bottling operation that is owned by the farmers who send their milk there. Currently, there are 105 owners, or patrons, as they’re called. Between them, there are about 8,000 cows. The bottling plant can see up to five milk trucks a day, dropping off about 50,000 pounds of milk each, and the plant does about $40 million in sales per year.

Monday’s snowstorm was the perfect opportunity for Sarah Foster to update a photo from her baby book
As a curious 3-year-old, Sarah Foster’s parents didn’t need to prod her much to go play in the snow. Even in late April. So, after a freak snowstorm on April 28, 1994, there she was, running around in the family’s Hastings backyard near what was then Tilden Elementary. One of her parents gave her a sign that simply read: “April 28, 1994. It’s snowing.”

Editorial: Uninformed vote shortchanges state
Remember when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi infamously said of federal health-care legislation, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it”? She roundly was blasted, and rightly so, and still is being blasted, not only because she obviously hadn’t read the bill but because she didn’t seem to have an understanding of its impacts.

Track teams finally get a meet in
For high schools in Minnesota, the track season is typically held outdoors. That would of course be news to the Hastings boys and girls track teams this year. The team has yet to feel the warmth of the sun, or to feel the wind on their face.
