Voters decide against voter ID
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota voters do not want to prove who they are. Forty-six percent of voters Tuesday wanted to amend the state Constitution to require a photo ID before voting, but 50 percent was needed. The Minnesota vote went against a trend in other states to approve voter ID.

Minnesota becomes first state to reject constitutional gay-marriage ban
ST. PAUL -- Minnesotans became the first state to reject a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Since a state law remains on the books, the vote does not automatically allow same-sex weddings. However, with a newly elected Democratic-Farmer-Laborite Legislature and governor, the subject is bound to be debated when lawmakers take office in January.

Letter: In support of Joanna Bayers
Popular or not, voting is an important right and responsibility. Like many of the rest of us, I would rather avoid the constant ads this time of year. Our system might have some flaws in execution, but it is still far better than some of the other forms of governance out there.

Letter: What mark do you want to take, Hastings?
The upcoming elections this November represent a crossroads for both Minnesota and our country. Despite the cluster of decisions we all must make come election day, I've chosen to write to you regarding a social issue that is being battled out right here in Minnesota, namely the marriage amendment that is being included on the ballot.

Letter: In support of Mike Slavik
I first got to know Mike Slavik while serving together as adult leaders on Mission Mexico 2005 and since that time he has been a great friend. I have witnessed his leadership skills firsthand and can honestly tell you he has the qualities to make a fine county commissioner.

We encourage you to vote for Mike Slavik for Dakota County Commissioner. We recently had some concerns about a city project near our home. When we contacted Mike, he was very responsive to our concerns and was helpful in relaying them to the city.

Letter: In support of Mitt Romney and John Kline
Olga and I moved the United States in 1966 and to Hastings eight years later. We have been proud to live in and treat medical patients here until our retirement 16 years ago. We shop in Hastings and go to church here too. We are part of this community and it is part of us. What most people, even our patients, do not know about us is why we are here. After all, we speak and look different than native born Minnesotans.

Letter: Elected officials are selling our rights to the highest bidder
I’ve been thinking about what seems to be making this country sick. What comes to mind is a time I was playing racquetball at the YMCA with a friend of mine. We were playing along, and all of a sudden these teenage kids ran into our court. They were messing around, and running all over the court.
