AFS-USA’s East Metro Area Team would like to recognize two local families who have opened their homes and Hastings to the world by hosting AFS Exchange Students. Helen Gergen celebrates her milestone 100th birthday
A century well lived … and still going strong. Helen Gergen was born April 10, 1913, to Paul and Emma Endres. She grew up on a farm in rural Hampton with her parents and siblings. This week, she turned 100 years old.

All cheered out: Budget cuts mean no more cheerleading at HHS
When budgets get squeezed, it’s inevitable that programs are lost. That’s exactly the case in the Hastings school district this year. Bundled in with a number of staff reductions across the district are the elimination of two high school extracurricular programs: cheerleading and the math team. The cuts are a result of reduced school funding due to declining enrollment. The state pays schools a certain amount per pupil, and fewer students means fewer dollars.

Second in the nation: Riverside Company is first runner-up at nationals
Last year, Hastings High School’s top show choir, Riverside Company, made its first appearance at the Show Choir Nationals and placed third. Last weekend, the choir returned to nationals, held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn., and did even better. Judges ranked them the second best high school show choir in the nation.

Doffing pleads guilty to school bus stop violation
Hastings Police Officer Rene Doffing has pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to stop for a school bus stop arm. A second charge for failing to stop for a school bus while children were outside has been dismissed in Dakota County District Court. The conviction was deemed a petty misdemeanor. Doffing was ordered to pay a fine of $300, and fees of $80. According to court documents, the fines and fees have been paid.
