The Rotary Club Student of the Month is Sam Weber.
Mike Johnson, the Hastings High School principal, highly recommended Weber. In a nomination form, Johnson said this about Weber: To say that Sam Weber displays ‘service above self’ is an understatement. On a daily basis Sam takes care of people in his life and does so with a positive and uplifting attitude. To see this level of responsibility and leadership in a high school student is significant and rare.

Snowfall was an early Christmas present to skiers
There probably wasn’t a happier person in Hastings than John Dewall on Sunday, Dec. 9, when the area was blanketed by a fresh coat of snow. The Nordic ski coach here has had to resort to dry land training for much longer than he’d like due to the recent lack of snowfall in the area.

If your target is politics, try “Minnesota’s Miracle,” by Tom Berg (University of Minnesota Press, $22.95, paper). Berg served in the Minnesota State Legislature in the seventies when politicos got things done.

For a lot of people, weather is a big topic of conversation. You hear the conversations at the salon, at the coffee shop and around home. There aren’t many people, though, who monitor the weather more closely than Hastings Nordic skiing coach John Dewall. For him, especially at this time of year, it almost becomes an obsession.
