Operation Christmas Child is under way
This holiday season, Hastings residents are working to brighten the lives of millions of needy children around the world. Right now, volunteers are preparing for the collection of gift-filled shoe boxes for the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, Operation Christmas Child, at a new collection site for the Hastings area.

Veterans Day events listed
For many years, the Hastings American Legion Post 47 and the VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 have hosted a celebratory dinner every year on Veterans Day. The dinner will be held again this year at the National Guard Armory, but it will look a little different. Restored military vehicles from World War II and the Korean War will be on display, as well as one or two modern vehicles.

Dakota City Heritage Village is making plans for its annual Harvest Moon Festival set for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20. Maddy Sake’s dreams for the future included, among other things, being a pediatrician or neonatal nurse. Those dreams met a tragic end last week when Sake, a 16-year-old Hastings High School student, died in a car crash. Her family is busy trying to figure out how to go on without her. Braveheart owner responds to closure mandate
Eighteen dogs are still waiting at Braveheart Rescue for new, permanent homes. In April, the Marshan Township Board told the rescue, which is located in Marshan Township, that because it didn’t have a proper rescue permit, it could no longer operate. The township does not have an ordinance to allow rescues, and board members denied Tracy's request that they create one.
