Show choir: Riverside company captured top honors at Iowa competition
Riverside Company, the top Hastings High School show choir, won top honors at the annual Waukee, Iowa, invitational, called Star Struck. A total of 18 choirs competed at the meet, including nine in Hastings’ class. In addition, the team received caption awards for best vocals and best choreography. Everyday hero: Ceil Strauss
Ceil Strauss didn’t even want to do the math. She was afraid, she said, at what the figures may show. No, she’s not a volunteer for the HFC United soccer program in Hastings. She gets paid an annual stipend of $1,500 in her role as president. The math she didn’t want to do was related to how much per hour that equaled. With four to 10 hours of work per week for HFC United, it’s understandable that Strauss would be afraid of the figure. Taking the average of that (seven hours per week), she makes a whopping $4.12 per hour.

Veteran/author to speak Jan. 19
Area residents are invited to the Pleasant Hill Library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, to hear local author and celebrated war veteran Lieutenant Colonel Mark Weber discuss his life’s journey. Lt. Col. Weber is a former aide to General David Petraeus in Iraq, serving as a military advisor. Soon into his new command, Weber underwent a routine physical which revealed Stage IV intestinal cancer in the 38-year-old father of three. Over the next two years, he would fight a desperate battle he was not trained for, with his wife and boys as his reluctant but willing fighting force.

Letter: Why aren’t humans as valued as animals?
I want to start out by saying that I love animals. I love the fact that Animal Ark is a no-kill shelter and I think they do a great job in our community adopting out animals to good homes. I applaud their efforts to create an annual no-kill day for shelters all over the nation.
