Book Report: Post-election wrap-up
Now that the election is over I thought I might stir the pot a bit with mention of a new book that’s been receiving attention. It’s “The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court,” by Jeffrey Toobin (Doubleday, $28.95). A writer for the New Yorker magazine, Toobin has written a red hot book about the conflicts between two young movers and shakers, Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

Letter: In support of Joanna Bayers
Popular or not, voting is an important right and responsibility. Like many of the rest of us, I would rather avoid the constant ads this time of year. Our system might have some flaws in execution, but it is still far better than some of the other forms of governance out there.

Letter: What mark do you want to take, Hastings?
The upcoming elections this November represent a crossroads for both Minnesota and our country. Letter: In support of Mitt Romney and John Kline
Olga and I moved the United States in 1966 and to Hastings eight years later. We have been proud to live in and treat medical patients here until our retirement 16 years ago. We shop in Hastings and go to church here too. We are part of this community and it is part of us. What most people, even our patients, do not know about us is why we are here. After all, we speak and look different than native born Minnesotans.

Letter: In support of Katie Sieben
It has been two years since I retired from public service as a state senator. Over those two years I have watched – sadly – as our government has been reduced to partisan bickering, a government shutdown and gridlock.

Editorial: Vote no on Minnesota marriage, voter ID amendments
Constitutions are all about the structuring of government; they offer overall guiding principles and framework to help make sure our rulers don’t trample on our personal rights and liberties. They’re big-picture documents.

Editorial: Vote Romney, his promise of a way forward
There’s little argument President Obama has been aggressive, bold and willing to take chances in the name of returning our nation to a place of prosperity and security. Recall his stimulus bills, the bailouts, the Affordable Care Act and even the daring mission that took out Osama bin Laden.

Editorial: Senator Amy Klobuchar has earned a second term
If there is a more effective, more responsive first-term senator in the U.S. Senate than Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, we don’t know who it might be. The former prosecutor has distinguished herself not only by extraordinary constituent services but also by her ability to cross party lines and build bipartisan alliances to get things done. That’s not easy these days in Washington, D.C.
