Session for those going through a divorce begins Friday at The Harbor
The message is a simple one: You don’t have to go through it alone. Divorce and separation can be two of life’s most challenging experiences. The Harbor Church is now offering DivorceCare, a weekly meeting to help people in the community going through divorce or separation. The first meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8. The meetings will continue on Fridays.

SEAS eighth-graders serve at Caring and Sharing Hands
About half of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton eighth grade students and parents served a meal for 300 needy people at Caring and Sharing Hands Jan. 16.  The day started with a tour of the Basilica of St. Mary and then the group proceeded to Sharing and Caring Hands. The students prepared ahead of time by doing research on Sharing and Caring Hands as well as collecting food, clothing, hygiene items and money to donate. The other half of the eighth grade will go to Sharing and Caring Hands in February.

Hope Christian Preschool will add kindergarten to its offerings
Its preschool program has been offering Christian-based education for years to 3- and 4-year olds. Now, with the 2013-14 school year, Hope Lutheran Church’s Christian preschool will enhance and expand its program to include one-half day and full-day kindergarten at its location, 16898 Michael Ave. (at the city’s southern limits, off of Highway 316). The kindergarten program is open to the community. Leah Bernau is the preschool director and she provided background information about this new venture.

Veteran/author to speak Jan. 19
Area residents are invited to the Pleasant Hill Library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, to hear local author and celebrated war veteran Lieutenant Colonel Mark Weber discuss his life’s journey. Lt. Col. Weber is a former aide to General David Petraeus in Iraq, serving as a military advisor. Soon into his new command, Weber underwent a routine physical which revealed Stage IV intestinal cancer in the 38-year-old father of three. Over the next two years, he would fight a desperate battle he was not trained for, with his wife and boys as his reluctant but willing fighting force.

Another session of a program for children going through death, divorce or separation in the family is being held Monday evenings at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Doffing agrees to early retirement
Hastings Police Officer Rene Doffing has agreed to retire early. The agreement, approved by the Hastings City Council Monday evening, states that Doffing will work in an administrative, or non-enforcement related, assignment until his retirement, Jan. 12, 2014. The retirement date is irrevocable.
