It was nearly the end of almost two hours of speaking to students in Hastings High School teacher Scott Smallidge’s social studies class last Friday. World War II veteran Richard Carroll, who grew up near Coates, now 92, had talked about his military flying experience, being shot down, and the time spent in a prison camp in Germany.

Last year, Hastings High School’s top show choir, Riverside Company, made its first appearance at the Show Choir Nationals and placed third. Mark Dayton values education, including higher education, into which he proposes investing $262 million over the next two years. That would be a 10 percent increase, and it represents the largest percentage increase in the spending plan the governor has pitched to the state Legislature.
