Letter: ‘A gun is an inert object that cannot act on its own’
Oh how the media jumps on anything they can sensationalize. Well, I guess that is what creates more sales for the media.

Resources are available for older adults who may feel isolated. In addition to the many activities appropriate for older adults available through Community Education (651-480-7670) and through the Hastings Senior Center (651-480-7689), both DARTS (651- 455-1560) and Hastings Family Service (651-437-7134) have visitor programs through which a volunteer visitor will be matched with an older adult to build a new friendship and perhaps enjoy a game of Scrabble or cup of coffee.

Letter: What is to be done with snow and ice?
I would like to know who is responsible for enforcing the City Code § 90.04 ice and snow on public sidewalks. Can a business or homeowner be fined if they are not properly cleared within the 48 hours?

Caregivers and agencies work together for strong bond
Thank You, caregivers! Last evening, Hastings caregivers met with the 11 Hastings agencies that are here to support them and together we imagined how we might create an even stronger community of support. The conversation was informative to caregivers and service providers alike. Special thanks to Oak Ridge Assisted Living for providing a lovely dinner. Stay tuned to future editions of the Caregiver Corner to learn more about what we discussed last evening.

Book Reviews: Rehashing the infamous rabble-rousers
“Now that science has attained its youth and superstition is in its dotage, the trembling, palsied wreck says to the athlete: ‘Let us be friends.’ It reminds me of the bargain the cock wished to make with the horse: ‘Let us agree not to step on each other’s feet.’” —Robert Ingersoll, 1885

Letter: Politics should not decide approach with deficit
Politics should not decide how to deal with the federal deficit. Politicians have a way of confusing the issues with their own agendas. There are practical solutions that don’t include slashing programs and raising taxes in the short term.

Book Report: The rise and fall of empires
I met a traveler from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert…Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!” Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The long and level sands stretch far away. —Ozymandias by Percy Shelley

Letter: ‘Don’t make laws concerning how I practice my faith’
I’m concerned about society’s definition of “separation of church and state.” The common belief today is that the first amendment (in regards to religion) implies a separation of church and state, that religious expression has no place in government and that any and all references to God in public and government spaces must be removed.

Letter: Why aren’t humans as valued as animals?
I want to start out by saying that I love animals. I love the fact that Animal Ark is a no-kill shelter and I think they do a great job in our community adopting out animals to good homes. I applaud their efforts to create an annual no-kill day for shelters all over the nation.
