Elvis memorabilia to be sold to help woman through ovarian cancer
About 10 years ago, Penny Hamilton was featured in the Hastings Star Gazette for her very large collection of Elvis Presley memorabilia. Several years ago, she died due to heart-related problems and her husband donated many of the items. That said, there is still quite a collection in the Hamilton’s Elvis room at the family home in Hastings.

Raiders volleyball team picking up steam
Things are looking up for the Hastings High School volleyball team. Hastings started its turnaround of sorts on Oct. 9 with a close loss to Forest Lake, a team that finished 4-4 in the Suburban East Conference this season. Hastings lost in five games to the Rangers, but coach Rita Girgen was pleased with what she saw from her team.

Keeping up the fight: Marty Caneff is 30 months into his fight with brain cancer
One morning in April 2010, Marty Caneff of Hastings had a bad headache. He couldn’t shake it, and he told his wife Margie he just didn’t feel right. Within hours, the Hastings father of three was in an ambulance on his way to United Hospital. A CAT scan had revealed a tumor on his brain. “It was horrible — It was totally horrible,” Margie Caneff said. “We didn’t know what was going to happen. That’s the day that our world changed. It was devastating, to say the least.”

Raiders fall to Rangers in five sets
Tuesday night was one of the highlights of the Hastings girls volleyball season. The team ended up losing in five sets to Forest Lake, but they played one of their best matches of the season and raised money to fight cancer in the process.

Volleyball team hopes to ‘pink out the gym’ to support breast cancer research
The Hastings High School volleyball program will be participating in the Side-Out Foundation’s 2012 Dig Pink October Rally. This is a nationwide event in which middle and high schools and colleges designate a certain game or tournament as a Dig Pink day to both educate the community about breast cancer and raise funds to go toward breast cancer research and compassionate support services.
