Hastings family stands for Chiari awareness
Two-year-old Caleb Maaske has been in and out of hospitals and doctors’ offices since he was 2 months old. Caleb, the younger son of Hastings couple Chad and Rachael Maaske, started getting croup and strider every time he got sick. He would wake up in the middle of the night not breathing. He sometimes had trouble swallowing, had poor balance, delayed speech development and other issues.

Vermillion artist invited to join exclusive group
Vermillion watercolor artist Andy Evansen continues to earn high praise for his paintings. The biggest news for Evansen came two weeks ago, when he was informed by the Plein Air Painters of America that he was invited to become a signature member of the group. He is just the 35th person to become a member, and is one of only a handful of watercolor painters. The rest are oil or pastel painters. The organization was started in the 1980s.

Show choir: Riverside company captured top honors at Iowa competition
Riverside Company, the top Hastings High School show choir, won top honors at the annual Waukee, Iowa, invitational, called Star Struck. A total of 18 choirs competed at the meet, including nine in Hastings’ class. In addition, the team received caption awards for best vocals and best choreography. That the team was able to pull all that off on Saturday amazed director Lin Warren.
