He held up a comb and a candy cane – they were two small gifts he had received years before. When he was barely 7 years old and living in an orphanage, Alex Nsengimana of Rwanda received the two items in a decorated shoe box. They were the best possible presents.

New York, New York at NewBridge Theatre
The NewBridge Theatre Company proudly presents “New York, New York” Sept. 20-23 at 8 p.m. at the theater space, 105 E. Second St. “New York, New York” is an evening of songs, scenes and dances from some of Broadway's best shows, both classic and contemporary. Audiences will hear some well-known favorites as well as be introduced to some work they might be less familiar with. Familiar or not, all acts will be sure to please. Church breaks ground for new sanctuary
The congregation of St. Philip’s Lutheran Church had a lot to celebrate on Sunday afternoon. They celebrated the ongoing fund-raising success for the church addition, celebrated the beautiful weather and celebrated the expansion project as they broke ground for it on the southeast side of the property. “We’re saying ‘Yes’ to God,” said church pastor, the Rev. Ed Frederick. “Let us celebrate.”

Volleyball team hopes to ‘pink out the gym’ to support breast cancer research
The Hastings High School volleyball program will be participating in the Side-Out Foundation’s 2012 Dig Pink October Rally. This is a nationwide event in which middle and high schools and colleges designate a certain game or tournament as a Dig Pink day to both educate the community about breast cancer and raise funds to go toward breast cancer research and compassionate support services.
