Letter: Superficial banter needs to be ignored
Recently, a letter was written about the presidential campaign being superficial. While I agreed that the superficiality exists, I did not agree with the rest of the letter.

I am writing this letter to urge the citizens of the Third Ward to re-elect Tony Nelson to the Hastings City Council. Throughout his four years on the council, Tony Nelson has demonstrated his deep commitment to the citizens of the Third Ward and our neighborhoods.

While much of the political conversation today is centered on the presidential and vice-presidential debates because of the faltering economy, we can look here to Minnesota for contributing causes.

Letter: Tolerance is missing
Tolerance is defined as: a fair, objective and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own.

Letter: Grace should be extended to all people
There is a push under way in Minnesota to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. This action has been introduced by some in the religious community as a premise to uphold the sanctity of marriage.

Letter: In support of Jim Arlt
Representative Pat Garofalo recently chastised Democrats on Twitter for voting to change the home mortgage deductions back in 2009 that would have made wealthy Minnesotans pay a little more taxes. That 2009 bill was vetoed, which Garofalo was happy about, because in his words it “would increase the cost of home ownership.”

Letter: Blame it on the elimination of hats
Many can recite a litany of factors which have led to our current culture of broken families and out of wedlock births. They list the pill, no-fault divorce, pornography and safe sex education as factors, and believe that same sex marriage would be one more step on the road to cultural ruin.

Letter: Vote ‘Yes’ for marriage
When a majority of the delegates at the Democrat National convention, on a voice vote, booed (God and Jerusalem), and the overall theme of the convention was government paid abortions and birth control, I wondered what had happened to my country. With 85 percent of Americans professing to be Christians, how do we explain the coordinated attack on marriage, religion, family and our culture, the values we hold most dear.

Letter: We should, as a community, be kind
Last week there were two letters to the editor in the Star Gazette stating that “Vote Yes” signs were taken from folks’ yards. It was implied that people opposed to the marriage amendment were responsible for taking them.

It took years but the old Hastings bridge off Highway 61 will be demolished and a new bridge is being built. The old bridge is a nightmare to local residents and caused too many deaths as cars tried to merge to get across it.

In 2011, newly elected GOP leaders promised a “laser focus” on job creation. Their focus was quickly distracted by rigid right-wing issues that brought us the state’s longest government shutdown.

Letter: In support of Mike Slavik
This year is the first time in decades that we’re guaranteed to have a new county commissioner representing our district. Why is this choice important? County commissioners set tax rates, oversee the construction and maintenance of critical highways, administer courts and human services, and ensure a quick and efficient response to police and fire emergencies.

Letter: Theft of campaign signs shows intolerance
Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment, vote “Yes” or vote “No.” This is very straight forward and simple, or is it? I am not writing in today to discuss your views, your choice of lifestyle, your faith or any other factors that will sway you to make a choice on voting. Today I want to discuss “intolerance.”

Letter: Traditions are being destroyed by oppressors
Every time we turn on the news we hear of another place in our country where God, a cross or a nativity scene is being removed from the public square. The ACLU, along with their co-conspirators, the Democrat Party, is attempting to destroy the traditions we hold sacred.

Letter: Are these layers of government needed?
On Sept. 18 I attended an informational meeting by the Metropolitan Council at the Dakota County Westcott Library. Met Council representatives for Eagan were in attendance as well as many Dakota County officials. The focus of the meeting was the Met Councils vision of a seven county plan which would extend to the year 2040. After listening to the presentation and reading the handout provided, I had a number of observations.
