Letter: Help firefighters find George Carleton’s relatives
Since 1881, 206 Minnesota firefighters have died in the line of duty. In 2011, the Minnesota FireService Foundation launched an initiative to move the Minnesota Fallen Firefighter Memorial from the baggage claim area at MSP International Airport and create a larger, more accessible and interactive memorial on the grounds of the state capitol.

Letter: Owner reflects on 25 years in operation
In 1987, when Hastings Automotive first opened its doors, I doubt anyone from this area would have believed that 25 years later we would still be in business. After all, from 1980 to 1987 four other entities had tried and failed to operate the Ford dealership successfully in Hastings.

Letter: ‘Everybody should have the right to get married’
I wish my fiance and I would have known about the recent rally here in Hastings against the proposed marriage amendment because we would've certainly been in attendance. We both agree that everybody should have the right to get married and live the life they want to live as long as it isn't negatively affecting others.

Letter: Hastings should be proud of Black Dirt Theater
Hastings should be very excited and proud to have a company the caliber of Black Dirt Theater. I attended the “Sound of Music,” with some reservations. In my mind, community theater can be cheesy and not very well done. That is not so in Hastings.

Letter: Iowa is good example of why amendment should pass
While the Star-Gazette editorial regarding the proposed marriage amendment is correct in stating that a “No” vote on the amendment would not make homosexual marriage legal in Minnesota since state law already defines marriage as between a man and woman, it does not state the reason many consider a “Yes” vote essential.

Letter: ‘Black Dirt is a tremendous asset to the community’
In last week's paper, Tom Braucks letter stated that he hated, in fact loathed, musicals because of their insufferable irrational melodrama and silly plots. Nevertheless, he still enjoyed “The Sound of Music” by Black Dirt Theater. Good for him.

Letter: Doffing trial was a snapshot of ‘decaying morality’
Hastings police officer Rene Doffing took something that didn’t belong to him, no matter what the cost of the item, then makes up a story about wanting to talk to the Green Mill’s manager about how to get one of them. From your account of the trial, no one verified this statement.

Letter: While musicals are an ‘abomination,’ this one is worth seeing
Let me be very clear: I hate musicals. Hate. I think they are an abomination of human intellect and society. If aliens wishing to make contact with us, or future generations uncovering our media post-apocalypse, viewed a musical first, they’d write us off as irrational melodramatic fools and cease all further attempts of discovery.

Editorial: Clarifying our coverage and the marriage amendment
We have learned in recent months that this fall’s marriage amendment will be followed closely in our community. Letters to the editor have already streamed in, pastors have written passionate columns about the matter and on Sunday a rally was held here to encourage residents to vote “No” on the amendment.

Letter: Why does the HPD patrol General Sieben Drive so much?
I am just curious as to why the Hastings Police Department seems to patrol General Seiben Drive and the road near Smead Manufacturing so well. It seems to me that the speed limit in those two areas could easily be at least 45 mph as there is very little, if any, accesses, and relatively low traffic.

Letter: Thanks to city staff for storm cleanup
Last week we drove on Spiral Boulevard and saw someone with a weed trimmer cutting all the weeds in the ditches. I must say it sure looks much better with all the ragweed and goldenrod cut down along with all the other weeds, or so called wild flowers.
