Lacrosse season begins with two losses for boys
When the Hastings boys lacrosse team took the field for its game on April 25 against Woodbury, it was just the second time all season that the Raiders were outside. The season was fours week old, but the poor weather this spring meant the team had to stay indoors for all but one day of that.

Celebrating 100 years - Hastings creamery started downtown, making butter
A lot can change in 100 years. The Hastings Cooperative Creamery Association, which last week celebrated its 100th anniversary, has seen several changes of its own, but one thing has remained at its core. “We seek to benefit our farmers,” said Dave Zwart, the plant manager. The co-op is a milk processing and bottling operation that is owned by the farmers who send their milk there. Currently, there are 105 owners, or patrons, as they’re called. Between them, there are about 8,000 cows. The bottling plant can see up to five milk trucks a day, dropping off about 50,000 pounds of milk each, and the plant does about $40 million in sales per year.

Editorial: Lawmakers’ turn to value higher ed
If budgets truly are statements of values then it is clear Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton values education, including higher education, into which he proposes investing $262 million over the next two years. That would be a 10 percent increase, and it represents the largest percentage increase in the spending plan the governor has pitched to the state Legislature.

Initial Hudson redevelopment plans disappoint: Concepts included residential, hotel and banquet space
It looks like it will be a while yet before the former Hudson building in downtown Hastings is redeveloped. Last Thursday, the Hastings Economic Development and Redevelopment Authority, which owns the building, reviewed three redevelopment concept plans for the building, but none of them were particularly attractive to commissioners present. Only Pam Holzem, Ron Toppin and Anthony Alongi were at the meeting. Because there was no quorum, the meeting was held as a workshop and no formal action was taken.

Letter: Go see Black Dirt Theater’s ‘Resurrection’
I had the opportunity to attend Black Dirt Theater’s production of The Sound of Music” last summer. Up until that time, I thought of community theater as a chance for amateurs to have some fun on the stage, resulting in performances high on enthusiasm but low in quality.
