Clothier is first civilian to cross new bridge
When construction started on the new Hastings bridge a few years ago, workers kept seeing a familiar face appear. He was hard to miss — on his little scooter, Bill Clothier stood out from the crowd. He’d show up every day (weather permitting), ask questions, poke around and make jokes.

Monday’s snowstorm was the perfect opportunity for Sarah Foster to update a photo from her baby book
As a curious 3-year-old, Sarah Foster’s parents didn’t need to prod her much to go play in the snow. Even in late April. So, after a freak snowstorm on April 28, 1994, there she was, running around in the family’s Hastings backyard near what was then Tilden Elementary. One of her parents gave her a sign that simply read: “April 28, 1994. It’s snowing.”

Peterson’s Twins memorabilia is a hit this month at senior center
When Jerry Peterson took a print of the Twins stadium to be framed by Bill Sylvander, little he did he know much of the rest of his Minnesota Twins memorabilia would be on display in the glass display case in the senior center at the Tilden Community Center. Bill and Ann Sylvander are in charge of the display case at the center, and some of their items have been displayed there as well. They’re always looking for others’ collections and Peterson fit the bill more than expected.

Everyday Hero: Sarah Wasvick
About four years ago, Sarah Wasvick’s son Taylor took to the football field for the Hastings Raiders. Wasvick wanted to help, and one thing she figured she could do was snap a few photos for the players. She wanted better photos of her sons, so she began clicking away and hasn’t looked back, spending her Friday nights in the fall running up and down the field with camera in hand. She’s continued the work, even though she no longer has a son on the team.

Flower-bombed: Hastings artist creates smiles with mobile flower displays
When he lived in Chicago, Hastings artist David Cook created sculptures that fit the city’s industrial nature. It was moody, haunting and even a little scary, he said. About four months ago, he started a new project that is vastly different. He made a collection of large, brightly colored flowers and temporarily installs them in various spots around the Twin Cities area. “I’ve been getting nothing but smiles,” he said.

Saved by a bride's request: Owners of iconic farm launch new business hosting weddings
Two years ago, Michael and Paula Bushilla had come to a sad understanding. Keeping their historic and iconic Hope Glen Farm, located just north of Hastings at 10276 East Point Douglas Road, was becoming less and less possible, so they put the farm on the market, hoping to find someone to buy the property.

Sledding memories: Discovery of toboggan prompts review of unique Hastings memories
These days, the options for sledding in Hastings are relatively few. There’s the government center, the middle school and Lions Park, to name a few. About 130 years ago, long before there were liability concerns and long before automobiles existed, the local sledding scene was much more impressive. A few enormous and well-orchestrated toboggan runs were located in Hastings, using the Second, Third and Fourth street hills, among others, to fly into downtown.
